Another fight has broken out between Ryan Garcia and his promoter Golden Boy Promotions.

In what has become as predictable as death and taxes, the 25-year-old Garcia 23-1 (19) has taken aim at Golden Boy head honchos Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins days out from his 12-round bout against Oscar Duarte 26-1-1 (21) at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on Saturday.

This week retired former undisputed middleweight champion and unified light heavyweight champion Hopkins responded to recent comments from Garcia that his promoter was not treating him with the respect he believes he deserves.

“Not treating him like a champion?” Hopkins said in an interview with FightHubTV. “Is he a champion? He got a world Ryan Garcia takes aim at Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins – again – Ring News 24 | Boxing News belt? Listen, we’re not in the business—and Oscar will repeat in his own way—we’re not in business of kissing fighter’s ass, telling them something that they’re not.

“Now, I will promote a fight, but I will not promote a lie. I’m going to say it again. I will promote a fight, but I will not promote a lie. Take that to the bank and make sure you get interest later on off that quote.

“I feel like I’m not gonna let the media or anybody else turn this into ‘you said this, I said that’. I spoke on it now because I want the world and the people to understand, whether they agree or disagree, they gotta go back to the videos.”

De La Hoya struck a more conciliatory tone on social media.

“Bernard and I have spent decades putting on the biggest events in the sport—including Ryan’s last fight which generated $30 million for him,” De La Hoya posted, referring to Garcia’s last fight in April, a seventh-round knockout loss to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis 29-0 (27).

“We build champions, help them navigate their careers to the top and make them the highest paid fighters.

“Ryan: keep focused on your craft instead of listening to some of your ‘team’s’ interpretations of comments taken out of context.

“Bernard and I will remain committed to taking your career to the top.”

But Garcia stoked the flames again at the press conference to promote the Duarte fight on Thursday.

“And another thing I wanna touch on is Oscar saying that we misinterpret what they say,” Garcia said.

“It’s plain English. I didn’t hear anybody speaking any language I don’t know. So it’s very clear to me that they’re backing this guy to beat me, just like they thought [Romero] Duno was gonna beat me. He was the next Filipino star. They say he’s the next Mexican star.”

The soap opera between the boxer and his promoter is showing now signs of abating. Consider this just the latest installment.
