Rising super flyweight Taylah Robertson 9-1 (2) will headline the first Premier Boxing Series show on streaming service 7plus when she takes on Gloria Gallardo 14-2-2 (6) for the vacant IBO title Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm, Queensland on March 27.
The new series is the brainchild of promoter Angelo Di Carlo of Ace Boxing. The deal with 7plus will see a 12 fight series delivered to free-to-air television this year along with a weekly boxing panel show called ‘Beyond the Ropes’. All of the programming will take place on a Wednesday night.
At the series launch in Brisbane on Wednesday, Di Carlo said fight fans can expect to see more female talent on his shows than ever before.
“For too long, we’ve left the women out of our sport,” he said. “For this first show these two young ladies are going to headline because we value them and we believe that they sometimes bring the best fights.
“We have got a lot of female fighters signed to the Ace Boxing Group and I believe that these girls are really going to light up the show for us.”
Queenslander Robertson, 25, knows what a great opportunity this is to build her brand in her home country in front of her hometown fans.
She is not expecting an easy fight from Mexico’s Gallardo, 29, who has not lost a fight in almost five years. Her two losses were on points in close, competitive fights.
“All of us fighters, we obviously study our opponents and I think this will be my hardest fight to date,” Robertson said at the launch of the new series.
“She’s a power puncher, she seems to be pulling off a lot of knockouts. She’s tough, she’s from Mexico, they don’t take a backwards step. My gas tank needs to be up, my skillset needs to be up, my footwork needs to be up, my speed needs to be up. Everything needs to be in supreme condition for this fight and it will be.
“I never look past any fight. Everyone I fight is a world champion [in my eyes]. This will be the first step towards the bigger belts. If I don’t get past this step, there is no other step.”
Robertson said the local crowd support would be vital in getting her through any rough spots in the fight.
“I have such a great support network, especially in Brisbane, my hometown,” Robertson said. “Everyone in Taylah Robertson shirts, they show up, they yell, they scream and they come with noise. And that gives me the edge, the whole stadium screaming and yelling, that bring my energy levels up and makes me want to win 100 times more. So having that opportunity to get that in my world title fight is amazing.”
The four fight card will start a 7pm and run no later than 10pm. It will also feature Jalen Tait 14-0 (8) versus Alexander Espinoza 18-1-1 (8), Rebecca Hawker 7-0 (3) contesting the vacant Australian featherweight crown against southpaw Jaala Tomat 3-3-1 and Lewis Chadwick 4-1 (1) up against Ben Horn 6-6 (1), all live and free on 7plus on March 27.
